As a kid I checked Graeme Base’s “Discovery of Dragons” out from the library more times than I can remember. His illustrations are so vivid that you can just fall into them, like the sidewalk chalk scene in Mary Poppins. So detailed that you can imagine exploring that world, crawling around the corner of the picture and living in it. His illustrations are simply mesmerizing.
Though I’m certain I must have checked out “Animalia” as a kid, I don’t remember it vividly like I do with “The Discovery of Dragons.” It’s essentially an alphabet book that uses ridiculous phrases (Think Dr. Seuss’s ABC’s) and crazy-wonderful pictures to illustrate each letter. I would never have noticed this as a kid, but inside this book is a little Easter egg for all of you Doctor Who fans out there–who I’m sure thought you’d never run into a Dalek until later in life.
The letter “D” page. It reads “Diabolical Dragons Daintily Devouring Delicious Delicacies”. You notice the dragons, the “delicacies”…but did you find it? I mean, I did give you a hint as to what you’re looking for didn’t I?
In case you missed it (and lets face it, it’s tiny) look in the window behind the dragons. What’s that? Oh, just a hidden Dalek…and the Doctor…and a donkey. Cool right? (And if anyone can explain how the donkey ended up in that little cluster, I’m all ears)
I do have to give credit where credit is do, though. I actually didn’t find this one on my own, Jenn did (and I think one of her friends told her about it). We had a copy at work, so she left it for me to take a look at (Thanks, Jenn! 🙂 ).
And, finally, since “domain” also starts with the letter “d” (Delightful!), let me divert you attention to the address bar. Notice anything different? Yep. Finally set aside the time and changed it (not really a quick process, but painless thanks to Bluehost tech support). If anyone notices anything weird, or if for some reason you see it go to the old domain instead of the new one, please, please, please let me know!
Lets all take a moment to remember the ip address that was posting on Facebook for a while. You all know how un-technically savvy I am.
But if you’ve got me bookmarked, you can probably leave the bookmark the same. It should (theoretically) redirect. Or…you could follow me by typing your email in that lovely little subscribe box or through Bloglovin. The next crazy thing I might add over there is Google+…oooh, I know. I’m a maniac.
I’ll leave you guys with one more “d” word today: donut. Why donut? Because National Donut Day is coming up this Friday, the 7th. It’s held on the first Friday of every June to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers behind the lines during WWI. There’s even a website with a nice little video dedicated to it. Krispy Kreme is giving away free donuts to visitors, and Dunkin’ Donuts is giving out free donuts with every beverage purchase.
If I’ll dress up like a pirate for a free dozen donuts, of course I’ll walk into a store for one. Hope everyone has a great week and a delicious Friday!
******FYI: I’m trying to get rid of some of the spam comments I get, so now you have to fill out a simple math problem to comment–just in case anyone is confused********
This is the coolest blog ever.
So cool that it lets you do math to comment…I think that’s cool. I might be wrong.
Did it work?
Yes! Yes it did!
