I have a confession to make:
I love my cons. L-O-V-E love love love.
And I feel that there is nothing wrong with anticipating some awesome geek out time.
This time, for whatever reason, was a little different than the rest. I’m not sure why, maybe it just felt different. I think part of it’s because we didn’t really have a new cosplay this year. I did wear my Tifa cosplay for a while on Saturday, but that was about it. I didn’t even pull out Sailor Pluto–although, after last time with the new boots and the blisters, can anyone really fault me for it?
Essentially the con was a little more chill for us than it has been for previous years. It was nice though because we actually got to go a whole bunch of panels(And we actually got there on time…and got seats!)
I was actually most excited about the bento box panels hosted by Emily from Bento Bloggy, Beth from A Boy and His Lunch, Kandice from We Aren’t Scared of Sugar, and Erin from Feeling a Little Lunchy. I initally became interested in bento after stumbling upon Makiko Itoh’s blog JustBento, and while I’m still far more fascinated Japanese bento I really did enjoy learning a little bit more about American bento. Emily, Beth, Kandice, and Erin are really passionate about sending their kids off with healthy lunches. Bento gives them a way to make sure their loved ones smile when they open up their lunches(and who wouldn’t smile if their food was smiling right back up at them, or wearing a mustache for that matter)
We went to both bento panels “The Art of Bento” was held on Friday night (the picture above). Saturday morning Katie drove (on the highway, for the first time, huzzah!) us in and we attended the “Make Your Own Bento Box!” panel where we got to, you guessed it, make our own Angry Birds bentos.
We all shared box cutters for delicate(ha!) carving and used our plastic knives (hahaha!) and plastic straws to create somewhat awkward looking edible Angry Birds.
But we all definitely had fun with it.
Bento wasn’t the only interesting panel. And let me reiterate how absolutely weird it was to actually go to multiple panels…we normally people watch and wander around the dealers room. Panels are an upgrade.
That stuff grew to be about half the size it started. I really wish that I could remember what it was called (other than that it had the word “foam” in the title). We went to this nifty mold making and casting panel, and the man in running it:
Showed off a few different products meant for mold making/casting. For a quick rundown, what he’s done is glue that red dixie cup down to a thick plastic sheet (from what I remember it was about as thick as a cutting board). There is also a gear glued to the white plastic inside the cup. He’s pouring the light blue mixture in to create a mold of the gear using a product called “smooth-on“. Once the blue stuff hardened he popped the gear out and used it as a mold. It was actually a much quicker easier process than I had imagined it being, and I’d definitely like to try it for myself at some point.
I purchased a copy of “We Didn’t Playtest This: Legacies”, the only game out of that series that I hadn’t gotten a chance to play before, so we tested that out during some down time.
If you want to see more of the game, check out Katie’s Youtube video. (That’s me in the blue…for the record wigs and wind don’t go together…I don’t care if they both begin with a “W”)
And lastly, because I had to include it (Lucci don’t kill me), I’ll end this post with John’s hat:
Very cool. Love the lunches.
Great blog minus the hat!! The hat must die.
Lol. I thought you might say that.
